Seven workdays to go. I’m beginning to get a sense of just how weird it is going to be, going somewhere other than the University in the morning. Between my undergrad years, four years at my old lab and two years at the one I’m at now, I’ve been going to campus every weekday morning since 1997. I’m not sure I even know how to go somewhere else in the morning anymore! Granted, I’m going all of about four blocks away, but still, it’s going to be weird.
I really should have written this entry yesterday, when it was a gorgeous day and all the grassy spaces of campus were filled the way they get in spring, with people playing and napping and picnicking and just generally enjoying the gorgeous weather. A new free-public-bikes system went into effect yesterday, so people were zipping all around on these cute little plaid bikes with bells and baskets, and everyone was clearly having a load of fun. And while they all looked about twelve years old to me, it was still one of those days when I really love the University, and made me think about how much I’ll miss being a part of it in some ways.
Of course, today was cold and gray and rainy, and I felt that way much less. Although the zippy little plaid bikes were still awfully cute. Nonetheless, my replacement came and I got her all set up with equipment and keys and some preliminary training, and it was all very strange.
Then again, no one really lives CMU for good; everyone seems to come back sooner or later either as staff or for grad school. So perhaps I will be back one of these days. In the meanwhile, it’ll be good to be somewhere else, doing new things. It’s long past time.
